aerobic and anaerobic respiration

Cards (5)

  • aerobic respiration
-respiration using oxygen(most efficient way to transfer energy from glucose)
    -equation is photosynthesis one backwards
  • anaerobic respiration
    -means without oxygen
    -equation= glucose➡️lactic acid
-does not transfer as much energy as aerobic as not fully oxidised(as doesn’t combine with oxygen)
    -used mainly during exercise
  • anaerobic respiration in yeast
-plants and yeast cells can restore without oxygen but they do produce ethanol and CO2 instead of lactic acid
    -equation=glucose➡️ethanol+carbon dioxide
-this is called fermentation(high concentration of ethanol can make it poisonous)
  • 2 main problems with anaerobic respiration
-less energy per molecule of glucose released
-the lactic acid is damaging to muscle cells and has to be removed
  • anaerobic respiration leads to oxygen debt, what’s oxygen debt?

amount of extra oxygen your body needs after exercise to react and break down the build up of lactic acid and remove it from cells, reacts to form CO2 and water
