      To investigate if participants would conform to social roles and to see if prison violence was a result of situational or dispositional factors
    • PROCEDURE
      1. Zimbardo used 24 male college students, volunteers, who were all psychologically evaluated beforehand
      2. The experiment was a lab/simulation
      3. The Stanford University basement was made into a mock prison
      4. Participants were randomly assigned as "guards" or "prisoners"
      5. Prisoners were arrested without warning, strip-searched, fingerprinted, and given an ID number and prisoner outfit
      6. Guards were given a uniform, as well as handcuffs, nightsticks, and dark glasses to avoid eye contact with prisoners
      7. Guards could not be violent or put someone in solitary for more than an hour
