Collision theory

    Cards (6)

    • What categories are the rate of chemical ractions dependant on?
      1. The frequency of collisions - how often particles collide with another
      2. The energy transfered in a collision - particles will only react when there is enough energy to kick start the reaction . This is known as activation energy which is the minimum energy required to start a reaction
    • Why is energy needed in a chemical reaction?
To break down the bonds in the reactants
    • What are the factors affecting rate of reaction?
      1. Temperature
      2. Concentration and pressure
      3. Surface area to volume ratio
    • Describe the effect of temperature on rate of reaction?
      1. Increase temperature--> more kinetic energy-->move around faster-->more frequent collisions
      2. Increase tmperature-->increase energy transfer in collisions-->more likely to satisfy activation energy-->reaction taking place
    • Describe the effect of Concentration and Pressure on rate of reaction?
Higher concentration/pressure-->particles are closer together-->more frequent collisions-->increase rate of reaction
    • Describe the effect of surface area to volume ratio on rate of reaction?
Reactant are smaller pieces-->greater surface area on the reactants for particles to collide upon-->more frequent collisions-->increase rate of reaction
