  • Structural approach

    The Structural Theory focuses on institutions and structures of the state. They key question imposed by such an approach is what role or function has within a country's political system. It also assumes that any change within the system affects other parts of the state as well.
  • Rational Theory
    Rational Theory emphasises the role of the individuals/groups within a nation and assumes that they will normally act or make political choices in a logical way to maximise positive outcomes for themselves or their cause. There is a heavy emphasis on self interest as a prime mover in a political action.
  • Cultural Theory 

    Cultural Theory places a lot of weight on the historical and sociological context when studying and comparing political systems, for example the historic emphasis on limited government in the USA, or the greater acceptance of the hereditary and non-elected aspects of UK politics, such as the monarchy and the Lords
