  • migration makes countries more diverse as the more people that migrate to a country, the greater the country's mix of people from different nationalities, cultures and ethnic groups
  • some migrants assimilate into the main culture of host country like celebrating host country's festivals and dishes which can equal host country adopting elements of migrant culture e.g. Wagamama
  • some ethnic groups do not assimilate and keep their own cultural identity, occurs more when there are huge differences in migrant group culture and host country culture e.g. religion
  • migration can be seen as positive contribution to society whereas some believe it should be limited which can lead to tensions for example,

    EU allows for free movement between member states, in 2015 around 4% of people born in the EU were living in a different country
    2019, 600,000 people migrated from other EU states to Germany - accounting for 40% of total migration
    perceptions are different, e.g. in 2018, 62% of Swedish nationals believe migrants make the country stronger, whereas only 10% of Greeks
  • USA is home to 11 million Mexican migrants, about quarter of USA migrants are Mexican. Some are low skilled workers and some are highly skilled professionals, most live in California and Texas as they share a border with Mexico

  • 3 reasons for variation in migration?
    • nationality - some countries have agreements allowing their citizens to travel without needing visas = opportunity to migrate e.g. Japan = 193 destinations, Afghanistan = 27 destinations
    • income - migration can be expensive
    • skills - some countries like Australia use point system for immigration to rank immigrants on their skills and abilities, only more skilled migrants allowed entry
