  • Pit latrines used by hundreds of faveladors a day
• Problems with waste disposal in the favelas

  • Rubbish not collected, resulting in waste being dumped on streets and in waterways
  • Attracts rats and other rodents which bring disease
• Problems with electricity in the favelas

  • Electricity not supplied, resulting in people creating "gatos" to steal electricity from the national grid
  • Causes many fires which rip through the favelas annually
