• after the act of union 1801 it meant there was no irish parliament
• parliamentary nationalist: wanted more independence but would achieve this through political means
• radical nationalist: wanted more independence and were willing to use physical force
• home rule party led by john redmond
• unionist wanted to remain apart of Britain
• unionist party led by edward carson and james craig
• the 1911 parliament act meant the house of lords could only veto a bill twice
• this meant there would be home rule by 1914 but ww1 interfered with this
• unionist weren't happy with this so they signed a petition called the solemn league and covenant
• they alsO set up the UVF
• eoin MacNeill set up the IVF
