  • he was a devout catholic< even wrote a book arguing about how luther was wrong
• Catherine of aragon: henrys wife and queen of england

  • she had only given henry one child- Mary
  • henry needed a son
  • henry wanted to divorce catherine
• anne boleyn: henry wanted to marry anne, but the pope wouldn't allow it

  • so henry split from rome, set up a new protestant religion
  • anglicanism ( the church of ireland )
  • henry became head of the church
  • he also closed down all the monasteries in england, wales and ireland. he confiscated all their land and kept their wealth for himself
