  • Oral Thrush symptoms
    White patches/plaques on the mucosal surfaces in the mouth that cannot be easily scraped away

    • Steroid inhaler users (who don't rinse their mouth after use)
  • Causesof oral thrush
    • Antibiotic treatment
    • Steroid inhaler use (forgetting to rinse the mouth after use)
    • Cancer treatment (chemotherapy)
    • Poor mouth hygiene
    • Wearing dentures that do not fit properly
    • Smoking
  • REFERRAL for thrush
    • Recurrent infection
    • Unresponsive to OTC treatment after 1 week
    • Crops of more than 5 ulcers
    • Babies <4 months
    • Any difficulty/ pain when swallowing
  • Treatmentfor oral thrush
    1. Apply Miconazole (Daktarin oral gel) to plaques four times daily after food
    2. Continue treatment for at least 1 week after symptoms have disappeared
    3. Adults, children and babies >4 months of age
    4. Risk of choking, use with care in ages (4months to 2 years). Do not apply to back of throat
    5. Not for use in pregnancy
    6. Not for warfarin users - increased risk of bleeding. SEVERE.
  • Counselling

    • Use sterile bottles & dummies after each use
    • Rinse your mouth after eating or taking medicine
    • Diabetics regular check ups
  • SEVERE INTERACTION BETWEEN WARFARIN & TOPICAL MICONAZOLE!
