    • Passed in 1998
    • Gives legal rights to people who have information stored about them
  • Principles of the Data Protection Act
    • Be used fairly and lawfully with the consent of the subject
    • Be used for the specified purposes only
    • Be adequate, relevant and not excessive
    • Be accurate and kept up to date
    • Not be kept for longer than is absolutely necessary
    • Be processed in accordance with the rights of the data subject
    • Be held safe and securely
    • Not be transferred outside the European Union without adequate protection
