    Not an STI, but can increase the patient's chances of getting an STI
  • Bacterial Vaginosis (BV)
    • Common cause of unusual vaginal discharge
    • Change to the colour/consistency of vaginal discharge (greyish/white, thin & watery)
    • Unusual vaginal discharge that has a strong fishy smell (can be worse after sex or period)
    • Does not usually cause any soreness or itching
  • Causes of Bacterial Vaginosis (BV)
    • Having multiple sexual partners
    • Vaginal deodorants/Douches
    • Perfumed/antiseptic soaps/bath additives
    • Using an IUD
  • Symptoms requiring referral
    • Severe period pain
    • Unusual period pattern change - heavier than usual or irregular
    • Women >30 with new/worsening symptoms (suspect endometriosis)
    • Vaginal bleeding post menopause (suspect cancer)
  • Canesbalance - vaginal treatment

    • 7 day treatment course (use one tube daily)
    • Safe in pregnancy
    • Triple mode of action: 1. Balances pH level, 2. Restores natural Vaginal Flora (relieves unpleasant odour), 3. Restricts the growth of bad bacteria
  • BV can be recurrent, GP can prescribe 6 months treatment (as reoccurrence can occur within 3 months)
  • Counselling for patients
    • If patient has a same sex partner they will need treating also
    • Have showers instead of baths
    • Use water and plain soap to wash the genital area
    • Do not smoke
    • Do not use perfumed soap, antiseptics in the bath etc

    Thin milky, white or grey, sticky vaginal discharge
  • BV can be recurrent, GP can prescribe 6 months treatment (as reoccurrence can occur within 3 months)
