    made by george marshall, the aim was to give $12.7 billion economic aid to war torn countries in the years 1948 to 1952

    a wall built between east and west germany in 1961 to stop people from escaping to the west, however 130 died from trying to cross through as part of it was made from barbed wire

  • joseph stalin
    strengthened one party rule in the USSR and cut back on people individual rights. he was convinced the west wanted to destroy communism.

    beloved strongly in democracy and formed an alliance with stalin so they could work together to defeat japan. he annoyed churchill because he thought the USA needed soviet support

    he came from a rich family which meant he has very traditional values. his politics made him deeply suspicious of stalin. he felt it was his role to stop soviet expansion

  • tehran conference november 1943
    roosevelt wanted stalins help in defeating the japanese. the ussr wanted the usa and britain to open a second front. britain wanted support in destroying the nazis and defeating their empire. ussr were to gain land from poland. no decision about germany was made
  • yalta conference february 1945
    agreements made that both germany and berlin were to be split into four zones. ussr would help the usa with war against japan. elections in the ussr would be free from now on.
  • potsdam conference july 1945
    truman didnt trust stalin and didnt want to give him any excuses. this therefore caused more tention. the usa dropped the first atomic bomb the day after the confernece, this angered stalin as he was unaware of it and felt unincluded. polands boarder moved west. germany was reduced in size and split into four as well as berlin.
  • cuba and soviet relations
    castro took control over the the cuban government and he wanted to remove us influence from cuba and instead support the ussr's communist system. cuba and the ussr became closer as a result of the bay of pigs.
  • detente
    it was to improve the relations between the us and the ussr. detente means 'the relaxation of tensions' which was significant because both sides wanted to reduce the tension between them.
