    • Dry Eye Syndrome
      • Itchy, tired, burning sensations in the eyes
      • Usually bilateral (affects both eyes)
      • String like mucus in the eye
      • Sensitivity to light/ Eye redness
      • Feeling of something in the eye
      • Difficulty wearing contact lenses/ Night time driving difficulty
    • Blepharitis
      • Itchy, sore, red eye lids
      • Eyelids that stick together when you wake up
      • Eye lashes that become crusty/greasy
      • Photophobia (increased sensitivity to light)
      • Edges of the eyelids become swollen
      • Uncomfortable to wear contact lenses
      • Usually bilateral (affects both eyes), tends to be worse in the morning
    • Reasons to refer for Blepharitis

      • Unresponsive to treatment/ Treatment failure
      • Constantly dry eyes
      • Concurrent conjuntivitis
      • Swelling on the inside of the eye lids
      • stye- Infected - pus develops on the outside of the eye lid
      • Photophobia (pain on viewing light),
      • Eye Pain
      • Worsening in vision
    • Self Care/Hygiene treatment for Blepharitis
      1. Apply warm compress to closed eye lids 5-10 minutes (helps melt oils built up in the glands behind eyelids)
      2. Gently rub the eye lids vertically/ horizontally to finger/cotton bud to loosen any crusting and push out any built up oils
      3. Don't clean inside the eye lid. Use cotton bud/ cloth with warm water to clean outside eye lids
      4. Twice daily treatment as above, then once daily when symptoms have improved
    • Propamidine isetionate - Brolene eye drops & Golden eye drops

      • Treat minor eye conditions including bacterial conjunctivitis & blepharitis
      • Apply four times daily
      • No age restriction and can be stored at room temperature

      > Blepharitis cannot be cured but symptoms can be managed
      > Try to avoid wearing eye makeup/ eye liner/ mascara (easily washable is ok)
      >preservatives in eye drops ' BENZALKONIUM chloride' can cause eye irritation in some individuals, give preservative-free if occurs

      > hypermellose
      >carmellose
      >polyvinyl alcohol
      > carbomer gel
    • counselling for dry eyes
      preservatives in eye drops 'benzalkonium chloride' can cause eye irritation in some individuals, if affected, preservative-free preparations should be used
    • propamidine isetionate - brolene eye drops & golden eye drops (SAME)
      • treatment of minor eye conditions including bacterial conjunctivitis & blepharitis
      • apply FOUR times daily
      • no age restriction and can be stored at room temperature
