Enzymes

Cards (3)

  • Chemical reactions in cells
    1. Cells rely on proteins called enzymes to kick-start chemical reactions and speed them up
    2. Enzymes have a unique way of kick-starting reactions
    3. Enzymes bind to one or more specific molecules called reactants or substrates at a special region called the active site
    4. Enzyme and substrates form an enzyme substrate complex
    5. Chemical bonds in the substrates weaken causing them to link together
    6. Chemical reactions at the active site lead to the formation of a different molecule (the product)
    7. Product is released from the active site
    8. Enzyme returns to its original state and is free to react again with another set of substrates
  • Most chemical reactions did not occur spontaneously in a cell
  • Enzymes enable cells to get the most of the energy sources available to them
