  holding a lit splint in hydrogen gas will cause a squeaky pop

  put the sample in a test tube and add 2 drops of dilute acid

  connect the test tube to a test tube of limewater

  if carbonate ions are present co2 will be released and the limewater will turn cloudy when it bubbles through
• how do you test for sulfates

  add 2 drops of dilute HCL and 2 drops of barium chloride solution

  if sulfate ions are present a white precipitate of barium sulfate will form
• how do you test for halides

  add 2 drops of dilute nitric acid and 2 drops of silver nitrate solution
