  • Fair is foul, and foul is fair
    the witches wanted to see a change in order. Bad things will be good and good things will be bad. Uncertain whether things are good or bad, for example Macbeth will be king due to his treachery, but Duncan will be killed due to his trusting nature. It foreshadow events in the play and displays the witches evil nature.
  • when shall we three meet again in thunder, lightning, or in rain?
    The weather the witches describe at the beginning of the play sets up the mood of the play as one of being dark and sinister, audience already begins to mistrust the witches in the play. Pathetic fallacy
  • double double toil and trouble / Fire burn and cauldron bubble
    could suggest that the boiling cauldron is a metaphor for Macbeths mind. The more it burns inside his heart the more his mind bubbles. Also it could show the witches deception with the words ''double double''. Toil means to trap and the fire carries hellish connotations.
