Digestive Enzymes

• Saliva: contains the enzyme amylase, which breaks down starch into smaller sugars
• Stomach: pepsin is secreted by stomach to break up protiens
• Small Intestine:

  • Duodenum- absorbs minerals
  • Jejunum- absorbs water soluble vitamins, proteins and carbs
  • Ileum- absorbs fat soluble vitamins, fats, cholesterol and bile salts
• Pancreas:

  • Lipases: digest fat soluble vitamins
  • Amylases: make starch into sugars and carbs into maltose
  • Proteases: break down proteins into smaller amino acids
• Liver and Gallbladder: bile emulsifies fats and fat soluble vitamins
