  • Short term emergency aid
    Aid given to help immediately after a disaster. It is a short term response.
    E.g given to those in North Nigeria who fled to Cameroon from Boko Haram
  • Long term development aid

    Aid given over many years to help a country with SEEP.
  • What is Aid?
    the help given from a country or NGO to another country (donor to recipient) in the form of loans, goods, equipment, people or technical assistance
  • What is Bilateral aid?

    Aid given but with conditions attached
    e.g tying the recipient into buying the exports of the donor country
  • What is multilateral aid?

    many developed countries give to international organisations e.g. world bank, they then distribute the money to development projects
  • What is 'Top Down' or Large scale aid?
    Money given to spend on big projects e.g new railway or bridge
  • What is 'bottom up' or small scale aid?
    Money given by a donor organisation e.g a charity to a local community organisation to spend on small projects e.g new well or solar panels
  • Positives of aid:
    1. Better government as they are given the correct tools
    2. Can solve conflict
    3. More economic and human development
    4. Health and education can improve leading to longer life expectancy and more sustainable population growth
    5. Assessed and appropriate aid given
  • Negatives of aid:
    1. Corruption
    2. Dependency
    3. Sometimes tied
    4. money should be spent preventing in the first place
    5. If market is flooded with food local farmers suffer
    6. Can arrive after crisis has eased
  • Why did Nigeria need aid?
    Due to the huge wealth inequality
  • what are the issues with giving aid to Nigeria?
    1. Corruption so aid isn't given to the right people
    2. Claims money has been given to navy
    3. Donors may have political influence over does and doesn't get aid

    few governments or international agencies now give aid directly to the Nigerian government
  • How is Nigeria benefitting from aid?

    1. Nets for life is providing education and nets to reduce spread of the disease
    2. World Bank-funded loans to businesses to help diversify the economy away from being dependent on oil so that new companies and industries are developed (Given $500 million)
    3. The UK government has funded health and HIV programmes providing health and education in rural areas.
