  • Prodromal phase
    3-4 days
    1. Runny nose
    2. Cough
    3. Fever
    4. Conjunctivitis
    5. Small white spots (Koplik spots) look like rice spots in the mouth, can be inner red ring on cheeks/gums
  • Measles rash phase
    2-4 days after initial symptoms, lasting up to 7 days
    1. Small erythematous/maculopapular patches, blotchy and red, which will blanch if pressed
    2. Appears around the ears before spreading to the face, trunks and limbs

    Overall: total skin body rash with flu like symptoms
    Incubation period is 7-14 days

    Rubeola virus
  • Pregnant women should be referred for measles
  • treatment for measles ?
    Paracetamol liquid
    • Anti-pyretic effect
    • Analgesic
    Ibuprofen liquid
    • Analgesic
  • MMR vaccine is offered to children (12-13 months of age)
  • Measles is the most dangerous childhood disease due to complications that can occur
  • 7% of patients can develop respiratory complications, otitis media/ pneumonia/ encephalitis
  • Measles is common in children 1-4 yrs (anyone not vaccinated can still get measles)
  • It is very rare to contract measles once you've had it before thanks to immunity
  • counselling for measles?
    • keep hydrated (avoid citrus juices as this may worsen the pain)
    • clean eyes with damp cotton swabs to help with crusting around eyes
    • keep child off school about 4 days after rash appears (infectious period)

    Mother with her Child (3 years) walks into the pharmacy and she complains that her son has had a runny nose, cough, fever and crusty eyes for the past few days and now this blanched ,red patchy rash has appeared starting around his ears and now whole body. see below, what’s the diagnosis ?
