  • Slapped Cheek syndrome
    Common in children
    • self limiting ( resolves in 3 weeks)
    • do not need to see GP
  • symptoms of slapped cheek syndrome
    Initial symptoms:
    • Feeling unwell for a few days
    • High temperature
    • Runny nose
    • Sore throat
    • Headache
    symptoms after a few days:
    • Red rash appears on 1 or both cheeks
    • Few days later a spotty rash may appear on the arms/legs
    • Rash can be raised & itchy
  • Groups at risk: REFER
    • Weakened immune system
    • Blood disorder (e.g. sickle cell disease, thalassaemia)
    • Pregnant women - refer as risk of miscarriage
  • Treatment slapped cheek
    1. Rest & Drink plenty of fluids
    2. Paracetamol/ Ibuprofen liquid - Antipyretic/ Analgesic
    3. Moisturiser on itchy skin
    4. Antihistamine liquid - Chlorpheniamine (Piriton)
    • Rash usually fades within 2 weeks
    • Do not need to stay off school after the rash appears
    • Body rash can take between 2-4 weeks to clear
  • Slapped cheeked syndrome
