Black Death

• The Black Death reached England in 1348
• Over 1/3 of the British population died due to the Black Death
• Buboes were painful swellings caused by the bubonic plague/large red growths that appeared in the glands
• Historians believe the bubonic plague(buboes, headache, fever) and pneumonic plague(cough sneezes attacked the lungs causing them to fill with blood, killed you in two days) were involved with the Black Death
• Fleas would transfer the Black Death disease from infected rats
• Due To the Black Death there was a shortage of workers so employers had to pay higher wages to attract them people had more money and spent some of this on education. more people learned to read and Write which helped spread new ideas more quickly.
• To prevent the Black Death people:

  ordered daily services and processions to pray for forgiveness and ask for gods help

  People went on pilgrimages to pray for gods forgiveness

  people lit candles as offerings to god
• Three methods of prevention that linked to the idea that miasma caused the Black Death:

  people would walk around ringing bells to keep the air moving

  people lit fires or carried herbs to get rid of the bad air, butchers got punished for leaving their rubbish in the streets and windows were sealed shut

  king Edward lll wrote to the mayor of London ordering him to clean the streets
• People tried to treat the disease by:

  praying

  wearing charms

  cutting open the buboes to release the pus

  mused the theory of opposites

  used leeches for bloodletting
