Britain and France go to War (this makes life more difficult for the UI because they were supporters of the french revolution)

Theobald Wolfe Tone (leading UI man) travels to France to get help from the French. In December France sent a fleet but it fails to put ashore
What happened in 1797?
The authorities hit back against the UI with arrests, executions and general terror
What happened in 1798?
The insurrection breaks out. May/June in Wexford. Antrim Down and Antrim in June, Mayo in August 1798. It is utterly defeated
Why did the rebellion fail?  
Informers, superior weapons and the failure of the French to arrive in time
