family types

• Nuclear family: mother, father and child/children.
• Same-sex family: parents/couple are the same sex as one another.
• Reconstituted family: step-family, one biological parent and one social parent.
• Extended family: three+ generations (grandparents, parents & children).
• Modified extended family: nuclear family with the traits of an extended family. In contact with their extended family (via social media/the internet).
• Beanpole family: a family that has multiple generations but not a lot of people in each generation.
• Chosen family: not biologically related to these people but see them as family.
• Empty shell family: parents are no longer in love but stay together for the children/financial reasons.
• Empty nest family: when the children have moved out of the family home. Causes boomerang children - move back into their family home.
• Lone parent family: only one parent is in the family.
