  • 1 - Helping them to find employment through a similar process to the employment programs
    How - All criminals who are coming out of jail have to choose between a number of different types of jobs made available just for them e.g. restaurant dishwasher/cook, cleaner, etc and have a contract with them for 12 months before they have to find a place themselves
    Why - Gillis and Nafekh - revealed that 70% completed their course without reoffending
  • 2 - Run anger management programmes in prison to help people remain calm in difficult situations and confrontations so they can react appropriately 

    How - Enrol all prisoners into anger management classes that run once every week and last two hours. Ensure that there are lots of separate classes so the teacher can focus on helping individuals better. Help teach them how to deescalate situations non-aggressively to avoid reoffending when out of prison
    Why - If prisoners are taught cognitive preparation, skill acquisition and application practice they will be prepared in the real world
  • 3 - Ensuring that they are not treated poorly in prison and don’t come to think of themselves as just a prisoner so it is easier to adjust to being released
    How - Make sure that guards have strict training before they become guards and have to recap knowledge once a month. Ensure that guards also get disciplined if they mistreat prisoners
    Why - Haney et al's study on prisoners and guards found that guards gain 'pathology of power' where because they had been given power over others they engage in oppressive behaviour
