  • Eczema/Dermatitis symptoms
    • Skin is dry, flakey skin, red, itchy
    • Skin can be broken, weepy, thickened
    • Commonly affected areas: nappy area, neck, back of scalp, face, limb creases (behind knees/elbows)

    Associated link between previous/family history of asthma/allergies
  • Emollients eczema counselling
    • Can be used multiple times a day (short lived hydrating property)
    • Soothes the skin, prevents drying
    • Can be used as a soap substitute/bath additive
    • Apply in direction of hair growth

    • Epaderm

    • Doublebase gel
    • zerobase

  • Topical Corticosteroids eczema counselling
    • For mid/moderate eczema, with unbroken skin (NEVER ON BROKEN SKIN/OR FACE/GENITALS)
    • Maximum 7 days use
    • Apply thinly once or twice a day only
    • Use finger tip application for measurement
  • Topical Corticosteroidsexamples in eczema
    • Hydrocortisone (for >10 years old)
    • Clobetasone (for >12 years old)
  • MHRA WARNING: (Emollients) - flammable risk - risk of severe/fatal burns with paraffin containing and paraffin free emollients
  • Steroid sparing effect: Always apply the emollient first, then wait 30 minutes before applying the topical corticosteroid

    • weeping, crusting, rash spreading (signs of infection)
    • cracked skin, bleeding (severe symptoms)
    • symptoms unresponsive to treatments
    • no identified cause not previously diagnosed as eczema
    • symptoms lasting longer than 2 weeks
