  • Leader: Francisco Pizarro
    Outline: When Pizarro arrived in Peru in 1531 the Incan empire was already weakened by disease and civil war between the emperor Atahualpa and his brother. After fighting and pillaging through some Incan lands, Pizarro, with less than 200 men, met with Atahualpa and his army in the centre of the city Cajamarca. Atahualpa refused to recognise the King of Spain or convert to Christianity, so Pizarro launched a surprise attack. Pizarro’s soldiers had guns, cannons, steel swords and armour, and cavalry. .
  • The larger Incan force had none of these weapons and they were quickly defeated and Atahualpa was captured and executed. Having lost their king, the Incan capital Cuzco was easily captured
    • The native people: Most were killed by new diseases, such as smallpox. Most of the rest were enslaved or were forced to convert to Christianity.
    • The leader: He founded New Castile,Lima and ruled over Peru, but was assassinated by other conquistadors in 1541.
    • The country that sponsored the conquest: King Charles V of Spain sponsored it, as Peru’s silver mines added to the wealth of the Spanish Empire
