  • Succession- Anne Boleyn became Henrys lawful wife, only their children could inherit the throne- Henrys daughter Mary was removed from the line of succession
  • Anne Boleyn was queen by law, Henry had rejected popes decision who to marry. the pope disagreed and said he was still married to Catherine so henry ordered his name to be crossed out all prayer books in England
  • Supremacy 1534- this formally said England was no longer under popes control, Henry was now head of church and had popes powers so could decide: church organisation, beliefs, jobs in church
  • Supremacy - Cromwell was appointed as kings vicegerent it vicar general in spiritual matters responsible for day- day running of church. However the pope had played a very small part in the affairs of the church. The pope tened to agree with the king on church appointments and Rome was rarely involved in disputes
  • Henry and Cromwell beloved these acts could make the English ppl violently rebel against them, Cromwell thought only a small number would have the courage to openly resist but even people who didn’t openly resist were dangerous
  • Cromwell used oaths to prevent this. a clause in the act of succession required ppl to support Anne Boleyn as Henry’s queen. Refusal wod mean punishment as a traitor- this was called the oath of succession- all Englands religious leaders were asked to take the oath
  • The treason act 1352 did not have enough detail for Henry’s needs
it’s was not useful for punishing those who spoke out against te kings divorce or the break with Rome
Cromwell passed the treason act which promised death to anyone denying the royal supremacy. no evidence of a plot was needed. this was a big increase in power of the state
