  • Impetigo
    Skin infection, highly contagious
  • Impetigo symptoms
    • Common in young children
    • Sores/blisters usually start on the face or hands
    • These can burst - crusty, golden/brown patches
    • Look like yellow crusts stuck to the skin
    • Get bigger & spread to other parts of the body
    • Can be itchy & painful
  • impetigo: refer?
    • first time sufferer, refer for diagnosis
    • any secondary infection
  • impetigo treatment?
    POM- fusidic acid/flucloxacillin
    Antihistamines- sold OTC to ease itching
    hydrogen peroxide 1% cream- 'crystacide' can be purchased from a pharmacy- apply sparingly to affected area 2-3 times a day. Do not use continuously for more than 3 weeks. Localised non-bullous impetigo.
  • impetigo counselling?

    • Children should be kept off school until rash clears/ or 48 hours after starting POM antibiotics
    • rash is clearing when patches dry out and crust over
    • hygiene measures: no sharing towels, cut nails short
