      a physical and mental state of alertness or excitement varying from deep sleep to intense excitement
    • stress management
      • is important for a performer to be able to control arousal to ensure it is as close to the optimum as possible
      • deep breathing
      • positive self talk
      • mental rehersal
      • positive visualisation and imagery
    • you can have 2 types of thoughts:
      1. self defeating thoughts
      2. self enhancing thoughts
    • inverted u theory
      optimal performance is at it highest point of arousal, just before the u drops down. once you get too much arousal, you get negative consequences such as performance going down
