  • Etiquette
    A convention or unwritten rule in an activity, not an enforceable rule but usually observed, e.g. shaking someone's hand at the end of a game
  • Sportsmanship
    Conforming to the rules, spirit and etiquette of a sport, e.g. helping someone up if they fall over
  • Gamesmanship
    Attempting to gain an advantage by stretching the rules to their limit, e.g. not giving the opposition the ball and just putting it on the floor if you get a foul against you
  • Contract to compete
    An unwritten agreement between opponents to follow and abide by the written rules of the sport, e.g. in boxing, the referee says "obey my commands at all times, protect yourselves at all times"
