  • Olistat (Alli)
    • For adults aged 18 and over
    • BMI greater than or equal to 28 kg/m2
    • to be taken in conjunction with dietary & lifestyle measures
  • orlistat referral?
    • Pregnant/ breastfeeding women
    • failure to lose weight after 3 months
    • Chronic malabsorption syndrome
    • Under 18 years old
    • medications: levothyroxine, acarbose, amiodarone, warfarin, anti-epileptics
  • Olistat (Alli) is to be taken in conjunction with dietary & lifestyle measures
  • Dosage
    • Alli (Orlistat 60mg capsule)
    • 60mg three times daily
    • Immediately before/ during/ up-to 1 hour after each main meal
    • If meal missed/ or contains no fat, then OMIT the dose
    • Maximum of 3 capsules in 24 hours
    • Treatment should not exceed 6 months
  • Side effects of orlistat
    • Oily stools
    • Flatulence
  • Use additional contraceptive methods if diarrhoea occurs (orlistat reduces availability of oral contraceptives)
  • Vitamin supplements should be taken at night (2hrs after orlistat dose) as orlistat impairs absorption of fat-soluble vitamins ("ADEK")=vitamins A, D, E, K
  • Healthy life style advice
    • 18-30g fibre daily
    • 2.5L water daily
    • Exercise 30 mins mild/mod intensity x5 times/week
