    • Fluoride ions are found in most natural freshwater supplies - concentration varies between countries and different areas of the UK.
    • Decision to add fluoride ions to water supplies is made by individual countries and local authorities- a controversial matter- there are arguments for and against.

    • Evidence that fluoride prevents tooth decay in children, by strengthening tooth enamel.

    • Believe fluoridation is mass medication and takes away a person’s freedom of choice.
  • Sources obtaining fluoride ions:
    • Water
    • Toothpaste
    • Mouthwash
    • Fluoridation of water supplies is optional, but chlorination is compulsory- we must have sterile water.
