Fluoride ions are found in most natural freshwater supplies - concentration varies between countries and different areas of the UK.
Decision to add fluoride ions to water supplies is made by individual countries and local authorities- a controversial matter- there are arguments for and against.
FOR
Evidence that fluoride prevents tooth decay in children, by strengthening tooth enamel.
FOR
Lowers DMFT (to a certain concentration).
Reduces pressure on NHS dentists and saves NHS money.
AGAINST
Too much causes…
fluorosis (discolouring teeth)
IBS
brittle bones
thyroid problems
increases chance of stomach and bone cancer
may cause infertility.
AGAINST
Believe fluoridation is mass medication and takes away a person’s freedom of choice.
Sources obtaining fluoride ions:
Water
Toothpaste
Mouthwash
Fluoridation of water supplies is optional, but chlorination is compulsory- we must have sterile water.
