      3. 16 non-communist leaders invited to Moscow, and were arrested
      4. Communists 'won' 1947 election (no non communists left)
    • Romania - Satellite State
      1. USSR took over and invaded in 1944
      2. Used intimidation tactics to influence election in 1945 – resulted in communist led coalition
      3. Communists returned in full power in 1947 election
    • East Germany - Satellite State
      1. Essential for buffer zone
      2. Became communist state in 1949
    • Czech - Satellite State

      1. Czech had been democracy until nazi invasion in 1938
      2. Stalin wanted Czech as part of buffer zone
      3. Government was overthrown in 1948, led by Gottwald
    • Hungary - Satellite State
      1. Election in 1945 led to coalition communist government – made Stalin unhappy
      2. Second election in 1947 resulted in return of communist government – due to intimidation of voters by candidates
      3. 1949 Hungary was a one-party state
