• impractical for large amounts of people- emergency decisions often have to be made quickly and only by a handful of people
• lack of accountability- impossible to hold a whole voting population to account. if a decision turns out to have unforeseen consequences
• it can divide communities- The EU referendum exposed and depend divides between regions
