aerobic and anaerobic

Cards (6)

  • aerobic exercise
    • takes place in the presence of oxygen
    • exercise is steady and over a longer period of time so the cardiorespiratory system is able to supply all the oxygen to the working muscles
    • eg, long distance running, endurance cycling
  • aerobic exercise
glucose + oxygen → energy + carbon dioxide + water
  • anaerobic exercise
glucose → energy + lactic acid
  • anaerobic exercise
    • takes place in the absence of oxygen
    • involves very high intensity exercise over a short period of time
    • glucose isnt fully broken down so it forms lactic acid which causes fatigue, discomfort and may force exercise to stop
    • eg, 100m sprint, triple jump
  • people who work anaerobically can only work for a short period of time
  • lactic acid
a waste product of anaerobic respiration
