  • Strengths of Piaget's theory

    • Providing understanding of the differences between the way a child + adult learn helped shape education for children
Child education tend to now be based on cognitive development
A great deal of research (longitudinal/cross-section)
A large amount which was inspired by Piaget's findings
  • Limitations of Piaget's theory

    • Over estimated people's formal operation abilities
    • Neglected cognitive factors accounted for the induvial differences in development that children show. e.g. memory span, memory, motivation, impulsiveness
Unscientific method: Lack of control, small samples, absence of statistical analysis in research.
    • Sample of Piaget used to develop the 4 stages of CD were his own 3 children + children of his colleagues', all whom were all educated professionals of high socioeconomic status, results therefore unable to be generalized to the pop of children
  • Criticisms of Piaget's tasks
    • Task no realistic
Research ask repetitive question causing children wonder why
Puts pressure on child to change answer
Experimenter does not give feedback to the child whether the responded appropriately
  • Application of Piaget's theory

Theory can be applied to children's education regarding learning strategies and educational programs
  • longitudinal: the data collected over a period of time, using the same participant
  • Cross sectional: The data collected at one point in time with multiple participants.
  • replacement: replace animals with non-sentient alternatives whenever possible
  • refinement: refine the procedures used to minimise the suffering for animals
  • reduction: reduce the number of animals used
