  • a strength is that there is real world application of the theory so there is evidence of it in everyday situations which is shown through Baddeley and Hitch's experiment and this increases the validity of the theory
  • however whilst there is real life evidence to support the theory interference may cause some forgetting in everyday situations but it is unusual. This suggests that most forgetting may be better explained by other theories such as retrieval failure use to a lack of cues
  • a weakness is that interference is temporary which is shown through an experiment done by Tulving and Psotka. Participants were given lists of words in categories and they were able to recall 70% off the list but got worse after learning more lists. At the end of the experiment the participants had to do a recall test where they were told the names of the categories and recall rose to 70% again. This shows that interference causes a temporary loss of accessibility to material that is still in LTM, a finding more predicted by interference theory
