Cards (3)

  • Arch bridge:
    • A concrete arch takes the load on the bridge by using compression.
    A) Arch Bridge
  • Cable Stayed Bridge:
    • The bridge is held up/suspended in the air by using high tension metal cables, fixed onto a concrete strut.
    • This functions because concrete is resistant to compression and steel wire is resistant to tension.
  • Arch Suspension Bridge:
    • The arch is made of a triangulated metal frame, which takes the weight of the bridge
    • The bridge weight is suspended in the air with metal cables connected to the arch
