active transport

Cards (2)

  • active transport
uses energy to move molecules and ions across plasma membranes, against a concentration gradient.
    • involves carrier proteins and is pretty similar to facilitated diffusion
    • A molecule attaches to the carrier protein, the protein changes shape and this moves the molecule across the membrane, releasing it on the other side.
    • The only difference is that energy is used (from ATP - a common source of energy used in the cell), to move the solute against its concentration gradient.
