postmodernism

Cards (5)

  • Postmodernists believe that individuals can make choices about their family and relationships they have. People now have more choices around this because of family diversity.
  • Giddens (1992):
    • pure relationships: people stay in relationships because of love, if people don't love each other anymore they will not stay in the relationships.
    • people can define their own relationships how they would like to.
    • self-discovery by trying new relationships is now a possiblity.
  • Weeks (2000):
    • there is more sexual & family diversity which is accepted in society.
    • the church & the state don't influence people as much as they used to.
    • negotiated family: people can decide what/who they want their family to be. Women now have more freedom to pick this.
  • Beck (1992):
    • risk society: tradition doesn't influence people as much as it used to, people now make more choices when it comes to the family.
    • people are aware of the risks
    • thought that nuclear & patriarchal families can, in some cases, be more stable than the negotiated family
  • AO3:
    • pure relationships are seen in society today. Increases the validity.
    • postmodernists ignore oppression that is still present in society. Means there is decreased validity.
