Postmodernists believe that individuals can make choices about their family and relationships they have. People now have more choices around this because of family diversity.
Giddens (1992):
pure relationships: people stay in relationships because of love, if people don't love each other anymore they will not stay in the relationships.
people can define their own relationships how they would like to.
self-discovery by trying new relationships is now a possiblity.
Weeks (2000):
there is more sexual & family diversity which is accepted in society.
the church & the state don't influence people as much as they used to.
negotiated family: people can decide what/who they want their family to be. Women now have more freedom to pick this.
Beck (1992):
risk society: tradition doesn't influence people as much as it used to, people now make more choices when it comes to the family.
people are aware of the risks
thought that nuclear & patriarchal families can, in some cases, be more stable than the negotiated family
AO3:
pure relationships are seen in society today. Increases the validity.
postmodernists ignore oppression that is still present in society. Means there is decreased validity.
