  • According to modern science, the Universe began as an explosion from nothing of heat and light and then developed over millions of years. Humans evolved over millions of years from earlier forms of life that were less complex.
  • However, according to the Bible, God created the world in 6 days and then rested on the 7th. God created humans in Adam and Eve who were fully formed
  • Some Christians believe the Biblical account is literally true

    Therefore, the science is wrong. This view would be held by Christian conservatives in the likes of North America
  • Other Christians believe the Biblical account is not literally true but is symbolically true, therefore aligning in harmony with science
  • Darwin's theory caused a whole range of different Christian responses. Many Christians in the Church of England ridiculed the theory. Fundamentalist Christians dismissed the theory on the grounds of human error since it conflicted with the 'Word of God'. Some 'Christians' lost their faith all together and some Christians welcomed the theory of evolution, rejecting a literalist view on Genesis.
