• People wanted to come because of a combination of push and pull factors
• push factors made people want to leave their country
• pull factors attracted them to the USA
• Push Factors: poverty, political and economic persecution, war, famine, and natural disasters
• Pull factors: Creating a better life, spirit of adventure, equal opportunity, freedom, a promise of religious tolerance
