Chemical Tests for Gases

• HYDROGEN test:

  • Insert a lit splint into a test tube of hydrogen and it burns with a squeaky pop.
• OXYGEN test:

  • When a glowing splint is placed into a container containing oxygen, it relights.
• CARBON DIOXIDE test:

  • When CO2 is bubbled through a solution of calcium hydroxide (limewater) the solution turns milky (precipitate forms).
