  • Led by Sir Francis Throckmorton
  • Plan was to assassinate Elizabeth and replace her with MQoS
  • There would be an uprising of English Catholics and a French invasion
  • When the plot failed, Throckmorton was executed
• The Pope used the papal bull to make clear that it was the job of catholics to challenge E's rule
• European catholic rulers like Phil II of Spain were encouraged t challenge E's rule
