Wind power in UK

Cards (8)

  • Wind power in the UK-
UK has more than 11,000 on and offshore wind turbines
These can produce almost 1/4 of the UK's electricity supply
Number of wind turbines will need to increase if the country is too meet its 2035 target of generating all energy from clean sources
  • Advantage of wind power- Sustainable
The wind is a sustainable resource and will never run out (infinite resource). This means that when resources such as coal and oil have shortages there will still be electricity created and so people will be able to use power appliances, maintaining quality of life
  • Advantage of wind power- Carbon dioxide
Wind farms don't release carbon dioxide, which contributes to climate change or sulfur dioxide, which can create.
  • Advantage of wind power- Amount of energy
Wind power improves countries as it reduces the amount of energy that countries have to buy from abroad to meet their demands
  • Advantage of wind power- Inexpensive
Micro wind turbines are inexpensive to buy and easy to maintain, this makes them suitable for less developed countries and can support future development
  • Disadvantage of wind power- Unreliable
Wind farms do not create electricity when the wind doesn't blow or when the wind blows too strongly
  • Disadvantage of wind power-Noisy
When wind blows, they are noisy. They are situated in areas where there is little other noise and so can disturb the locals, causing conflict between local people and generating company.
  • Disadvantage of wind power- Ugly sight

Situated on top of hills at 30 metres high. Means that in beautiful rural area they are easily visible. Although some people like look of turbines, other people living in area might think they are eyesore and cause visual pollution
