Simpson and Chloroform

• Simpson -

  • Used newly discover ether (which had side effects such as vomiting and coughing, and long periods unconscious) for women in childbirth.
  • Found Chloroform, tested, and discovered that it had less side effects than ether.
  • Used on women during childbirth, and in surgery.
• Chloroform -

  Took time to become widely used because:

  • Too much = death.
  • Too little = pain.
  • People believed that pain during childbirth was God's intention until........ Queen Victoria used it and praised it in child birth (1853).

  More complex surgeries were done, which increased the death rate because the issues of blood loss and infection hadn't been resolved.
