  • Sources of Revenue (Part 1)
    Tallage - Compulsory land tax for peasants living in royal towns. Many thought it was too expensive
    Tax on Moveable and incomes - Introduced by John in 1207, this meant that tax had to be paid for everything at a thirteenth of its value. This only happened once
    Role Of the Sheriff - Sheriffs collected taxes from the royal demesne. They could keep money above the required sum. Sheriffs were very wealthy
    The profits of Justice - people would pay the King to favour their sides in court cases, additionally possesions of convicted people went to the king

    Feudal incidents - the king could call upon his cassals to make paymnets for various things including forest fines, to pay for Ransom, to pay for the King's fuaghters' dowry and wardship fines
    Feudal incidents (forest fines) - th KIng could claim forest fines for anyone lviving, working or hunting in the forest
    Scutage - this was a fee that meant tenants in chief didnt have to provdie knights service
    The royal demnse - this land was held directly by the king. raised money throuhg sale of crops and livestock rent and tallage
  • Why was normandy important to richard john and philip 

    Strong trade links existed between Normandy and England
    if the french king gained control of Normandy, he could use it as a base to laucnh an attakc on Englanf
    A loss of NOrmandy could make the Barons lose respect for the Englihs king
    Normandy was only a day's journey from Paris, a potential threat for an invasion of france
    Many leading barons had land in Normandy and England
    It was a very wealthy
    The key region was known as the Norman Vexin - this land was between Paris and Rouen
  • Richard and Normandy
    From 1994 to 1204 Richard, John and Philip were fighting over control of Normandy
  • Normandy was officially under English control, but Philip controlled most of Normandy east to the river Seine
  • Philip also had important strongholds such as Gisors, and his army was also in striking distance of Rouen
  • Many Barons backed Philip as they thought he would win and this way they wouldn't lose their lands
  • In Aquitain, leading barons were in revolt against Richard
  • Philip had powerful allies including the Counts of Toulouse and Flanders, as well as being a strong military leader
  • Philip spread mistrust in Richard saying he was planning things with Saladin
  • WInning normandy May 1194
    PHilip laid seige to richards castle of Verneuli this managed to brind down the caslte walls however richard arrive jsut in time and philips army was forced to withdraw after knights and crossbowmen were sent to break the French lines, and reinforce the garrison (military post – where the troops are stationed) defending the castle. In addition, John was now fighting on Richard’s side.
  • Winning Normandy JUly 1194
    ´Both Philip and Richard’s armies went towards the town of Vendome, as Richard advanced, the French retreated. Richard caught Philip’s wagon train seizing horses, tents, treasure and more. This was a humiliating defeat for Philip and he hastily retreated north.
