Respiration - Plants

• Respiration is the process of transferring energy
• Respiration is NOT "Breathing In and Out"
• Respiration can be aerobic or anaerobic

  Needs plenty of oxygen, is the most efficient way to transfer energy from glucose

  Glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water (+ energy)
• Anaerobic respiration


  Doesn't use oxygen, produces less energy per glucose molecule than aerobic respiration
• Anaerobic respiration in animals

  Glucose → lactic acid (+ energy)
• Anaerobic respiration in plants

  Glucose → ethanol + carbon dioxide (+ energy)
• Fungi and yeast also respire anaerobically to produce ethanol and carbon dioxide
• Measuring temperature change from respiration

  Use insulated flasks, one with respiring beans and one control, measure temperature difference
