• In 1911, 50% of Birmingham‘s jobs were in manufacturing
• By 1951, the development of the car industry led to a 39% population growth and jobs increased by 50%
• Globalisation caused motor manufacturing to move abroad and led to 40,000 jobs lost by 1981
• More recently there has been a growing quaternary sector in Birmingham supported by the 5 universities
• Despite the recent regeneration, Birmingham has struggled to respond to deindustrialisation. There are still high inequalities in housing, education, health and employment
