Gamma

• After an alpha or beta decay surplus energy is sometimes emitted. This is gamma radiation and has a high frequency and short wavelength. The atom isn’t changed
• Travels several metres in air
• Penetrates paper, foil
• Least ionising
• Partially absorbed by lead
• Thick lead will stop most gamma rays
